Oriental Prince of Orange Poppy

Oriental Prince of Orange Poppy, Papaver orientale (Toledo, OH) I came across these orange poppies in the Old West End yesterday. Papaver orientale has petals the color of ripe tangerines with an almost papery look, and the 5-inch blossoms dominate any garden in which they are planted.

Despite their presence near a set of folding tables hawking all sorts of merchandise on Robinwood, these poppies brought an element of the exotic to an urban landscape.

The common name is a reference to the Dutch royal family of Orange-Nassau, who are still the titular dynastic rulers of the Netherlands.
